Larry Dunlap was a 1961 graduate of Conotton Valley High School who lettered all four years in baseball, football, and basketball for a total of 12 varsity letters. Dunlap was actually offered a scholarship at Ohio University in basketball after he graduated but chose to sign with the Cleveland Indians as a left-handed pitcher right out of high school and was promptly sent to Tucson early in 1962 for spring training with the Indians and then was assigned to their minor league affiliate, the Dubuque Packers. Dunlap played one year in the minors and was released to make room for Jim “Mudcat” Grant, who later starred for the Indians for many years. He is a member of the Tuscarawas County Cy Young Baseball Hall of Fame.
Dunlap was also a 1961 All-Eastern Ohio basketball player who scored over 1,000 points in his high school career. He held the career total points record at Conotton Valley High School for 42 years before it was broken with the advent of the three point shot.
